Roland Baril

Eighth Grade

I was raised in Sonoma County, the youngest of six, in a close-knit family. After a 4-year gap
between high school and college, filled with many wonderful adventures and outdoor jobs for
forest management and carpentry, I completed my BA in History at Sonoma State U., followed
by a 2-year credential program in Waldorf Education at Sunbridge College in NY. Following a 5
year stretch of modeling in Milan, Madrid, NY and SF, and the birth of my two sons in 1988 and
1992, I took my first teaching position in Saratoga Springs, NY. There I was the “class teacher”
for all core curricula for a group of some 20 students from grades 1-8. I then took another class
through grades 1-7 before moving back to my hometown of Santa Rosa in 2007, where I
worked for 4 years as the Lower School Principal at Summerfield Waldorf School and Farm in
SR. Also, from 2002-2007 I served on the Assn. of Waldorf Schools of North America (AWSNA)
as their Leadership Council Representative for the Mid-Atlantic Region. It was during this time
that I also began to work on accreditation teams for several NorCal independent schools
seeking WASC/AWSNA accreditation. In 2011, I was hired to be the Dean of Education for
Greenwood School in Mill Valley, until such time that I was asked by the Head of School to
“rescue” our 8th grade class who lost their teacher mid-year due to illness. In stepping back into
the classroom after about 6 years in admin, I realized that my true vocation is teaching. Thus,
for the last 7 years I have been looping as the class teacher for grades 5-8.

Personal interests include both local and long tours on motorcycles with friends or solo with my
wife, Michele; tennis, golf, baseball, dance, Spatial Dynamics; cooking; time with my two adult
sons, Blaze and Jeremy; performing with my rock n’ roll band, “Redwood Highway Ramblers”;
hiking, quiet time in nature with our dog; time with my wife and her beautiful horse, Ronan.
