Summary

The Marin School, an independent college-preparatory high school in San Rafael, California, seeks a full-time Assistant Head of School.

 

The Marin School serves approximately 90 students in grades 9-12. Our mission is to provide a collaborative learning community that inspires confidence, creativity, integrity, and academic excellence through a deep belief in each student’s potential. Our motto is "Small School. Big Impact." Class size is small by design, typically 7-10 students, to allow teachers to fully understand their students and give them the ability to personalize instruction with experiential learning, innovative lessons and non-traditional, yet effective, learning opportunities.

Position Purpose

The Assistant Head of School works collaboratively with other administrative and teaching colleagues to maintain a learner-centered, inclusive school community. The Assistant Head is responsible for ensuring mission consistency, strategic alignment, and overall effectiveness across TMS’s academic departments and programs while also driving innovation in curricular, pedagogical, and administrative practices.

 

The duties of the Assistant Head of School include but are not limited to:

  • Oversee student programs from Learning Services, College Counseling, Social Emotional Learning, Athletics, and Student Leadership & Activities.

  • Support and monitor individual student success, academically (including grading), socially and emotionally.

  • Manage student discipline, focusing on a restorative approach. 

  • Supervise Student Services Team.

  • Develop strong relationships with faculty and staff to support student success and professional growth.

  • Work with department chairs and faculty to develop engaging curriculum and ensure that it is well-articulated, developmentally-appropriate, grounded in current educational best practices, and aligned across grade-levels and divisions.

  • Observe and evaluate faculty members. 

  • Oversee the master schedule and calendar processes, including creation of the course catalog, coordination of student course recommendations, academic advising for students, etc. 

  • Maintain communication and relationships with parents to support student success and foster parent involvement. 

  • Review handbooks annually (Faculty and Employee Handbooks), and be primarily responsible for Parent & Student Handbook. 

  • Oversee campus safety procedures, drills, and safety team. 

  • Plan and coordinate professional development days for faculty and staff.

 

Professional Qualities

TMS seeks a dynamic and innovative leader who understands and embodies the mission and vision of the school. The successful candidate will possess outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, a broad and contemporary educational perspective, a highly creative ability to problem-solve, and a demonstrated track record of successfully leading diverse constituencies. Although non-traditional candidates will be considered, previous experience as a teacher or administrator in an educational setting is strongly preferred.

Qualifications 

  • A master’s degree or higher in educational leadership, teaching, administration, or related fields.

  • 3+ years of successful administrative experience in an upper division or high school. Independent school experience is preferred.  

  • Experience working with students and families of diverse backgrounds, including but not limited to work with neurodiverse students. 

  • Demonstrated skill in communication and interpersonal relationships within and across multiple constituencies.
