2009 Outside the Walls

January 7-13, 2009

This was the first year that TMS held its Intersession. Here's the agenda; you can see how varied it was and clicking the link will show you the details:

Mind/Body Matters: Taking care of ourselves from the inside out

This intersession is designed for participants to experience the complex and delicate connection between our minds and our bodies, with the ultimate goal of exploring meaningful ways to care for ourselves spiritually, emotionally and physically.

On Camera Auditioning Workshop

Students will learn how to present themselves with confidence, ease, sincerity and a positive, cooperative attitude in potentially tense situations. Students will also have the opportunity to practice an attitude of professionalism in a creative pursuit that they are passionate about. Finally, students will enjoy a fun experience of the professional performance world, which could also prepare them actually to enter that world in some capacity if they so choose at some point.

The Art and Science of Food

Over the course of five days we will examine how food makes it from grower to the table. Students will be introduced to the Slow Food movement with a visit to the Farmer’s Marketwhere we will meet local growers, purchase ingredients, and bring them back to school. At school, we will learn some kitchen survival skills and how to prepare some basic dishes. In doing so, we will also learn new recipes, along with the art of food presentation.

The Bay Area - Off The Beaten Path

On each of the first four days we will visit unique and wonderful places all around the Bay Area and capture images of those places. Each day we will stop for lunch at an iconic eatery on location. We will return to school in the afternoon to download those images, sort them, edit them and publish them in our own individual blogs.

Exploring Buddhism: Don't Just Do Something; Sit There

In the morning there will be a presentation of the historical figure called Siddhartha Gautama, a prince in a small kingdom near modern day Nepal. He is the person most people refer to when they talk about the Buddha. Who was he? What was it that he discovered?

Day Labor, Immigration, and Community: A Case Study

The issue of day labor and immigration is one of the most important topics in America today. Towns across the United States are dealing with the issue in many different ways; we will be focusing on the approach taken by the town of Graton in Sonoma County.

Exploratorium to Go!

This intersession experience will take students to the Exploratorium to analyze and evaluate the different exhibits at the museum. The exhibits demonstrate numerous scientific concepts, and ideas. Students will observe and choose one or two exhibits to replicate on campus at TMS. They will be required to use and practice skills in measuring and planning, as well as learning to assemble an exhibit quality structure with power tools.
