The Marin School Theatre Project delighted audiences on the evenings of May 11th and 12th with its performance of "It's All in the Timing...3", a series of six short contemporary comic plays.

Last Friday the zoology classes went out to Duxbury Reef in Bolinas to do the rocky intertidal monitoring project that is administered through the LiMPETS program of the Farallones Marine Sanctuary Association. We were joined by 20 second graders from the Manor School in Fairfax. After the project, our TMS students acted as docents for the second graders and we all chad a great time exploring the tide pools. After that, we went to the Tomale Bay Oyster Company for lunch where we l;earned about oyster ecology and how to open (shuck) and eat oysters.

The biology classes went out to Muir Beach on May 14th to monitor the sand crab population as part of the sandy beach monitoring project that is administered through the LiMPETS program of the Farallones Marine Sanctuary Association. The sampling conditions were perfect and we're happy to report that we are starting to see sand crabs again after years of zero counts following the oil spill from when the Costco Busan hit the Bay Bridge.

As part of their class project on 20th-century totalitarianism, sophomore world history students carried out a group performance art piece that turned the school for one day into a fictitious dictatorship called "The People's School for Science and Technology." Science teacher Vern Castle posed as "the Big Leader," becoming the subject of propaganda posters, a video presentation, and a live skit at the regular morning meeting.

Lynn Tierney, ex-FDNY deputy commissioner and 9/11 Twin Towers survivor visited TMS last Tuesday, May 8, 2012 and talked to the TMS community about her 9/11 experience.

Check out the new large-scale insects created by students in Art and Zoology classes. Students researched their insects, studied them through drawing to simplify their forms, and created these big creatures with reed and hand-made paper. Check out the display at the annual TMS Festival of the Arts on May 24!

Inspired by the documentary Pelada, the story of a young American couple searching the globe for soccer, the students in the OTW week session "For the Love of the Game" did just that, only here in their home town of San Francisco. After three days of organizing pick-up games in Marin and SF, and interviewing players and fans from around the world, they finished the week creating a short film of their own. It addresses three basic questions: What do you enjoy about soccer? What do you find special about it? How do you think soccer unites the world?

Four The Marin School poets won awards this year in the 23^rd Annual Marin County High School Poetry Contest sponsored by The Marin Poetry Center. They are Ricardo Romero, Emma Delaporte, Emma Cormia and Justin McDonnell. The students are set to receive their awards and read their poems at a special ceremony on May 8^th.

Equipped with their digital cameras, TMS students explored nature and traveled to west Marin to photograph the breathtaking landscapes. They also visited the Academy of Science in Golden Gate Park. Later in the week they came back to the school to select, edit and produce the photos that will be turned into photo cards and a calendar. These items will be sold online for the benefit of Drawbridge, an arts program that serves homeless and other vulnerable children in seven Bay Area counties. www.drawbridge.org

TMS students spent five-days, four-nights on a journey down the Camino Real (Hwy 101) which included visits to four historical missions and a stay at the Metta Forest Monastery near San Diego.

The zoology classes released baby rainbow trout into Bon Tempe Lake after raising them from the "eyed eggs" that were received in January through the Trout in the Classroom program.

The zoology classes kicked off their study of reptiles and amphibians with a trip to the East Bay Vivarium - an amazing pet store in Berkeley that specializes in reptiles, amphibians, and arachnids.

On March 30, 2012 TMS students volunteered their time at many Marin charities in honor of César Chávez Day of Service. The day started with an all-school assembly with a very special guest, Anthony Chavez, grandson of César Chávez.

TMS freshman Laura Hanson is having her first solo art show starting next Monday, April 9. All proceeds will go to her favorite nonprofit, an organization called Charity:Water, which brings clean and safe drinking water to people around the world.

On March 30, 2012, TMS students will volunteer their time in celebration of the César Chavez Day of Service. The day will start with an all-school assembly with a special guest, Anthony Chavez, grandson of César Chavez.

Outside the Walls is coming up! The week of April 2 we'll be enjoying out of the classroom environments doing "real world" activities. All students and faculty participate and if the past is any indication, everyone enjoys themselves immensely!

Congratulations to TMS 10^th grader, Jordan Packer, who placed first in the local-level 75th Annual Student Speakers Contest sponsored by Multiple District Four California Lions Club. Jordan will now have a chance to compete in the zone competition on March 3.

The class toured the historic building, observed a death penalty case being argued that day and sat down for a Q&A with two of the judges - Chief Judge Alex Kozinski and Judge Carlos T. Bea.

On Wednesday, September 15^th, TMS Film Teacher Kieran Ridge presented Citizen Kane to over 25 film buffs that purchased spots as part of the Live Auction at the 2010 Chairman's Gala.

TMS Senior Matt Mills spent his summer volunteering at The Chula Vista Nature Center in San Diego. The center is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing environmental education on coastal resource conservation, and instilling a respect for nature and wildlife in people of all ages.

Rescued birds, including owls, pelicans, gnatcatchers and eagles are just a few of the Center’s resident native birds. Matt took all manner of care of the birds, particularly the raptors. He spent many hours being the guy standing with the birds and talking with visitors at the Center. They call it “working” the birds.

At our all-school assembly on January 25, students from LEAP schools in South Africa performed songs, dances and led a Q & A about their personal experiences in South Africa.

The 2nd annual Poetry Out Loud competition was held January 21 at TMS. Poetry Out Loud, sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts and The Poetry Foundation, is a nationwide program that involves student recitation of any poem offered on the Poetry Out Loud website.

The ever-popular "Hamlet Trial" has become something of a rite of passage for senior English students at The Marin School.

On Friday, October 30th, Marin School students came to classes wearing Halloween costumes, as the culmination of a Student Council-sponsored spirit week around the holiday.

The Mill Valley Film Festival came to The Marin School as the film and drama departments had the pleasure of hosting the co-directors Stephanie Argy and Alec Boehm and two cast members Donal Thoms-Capello and Meg Brogan from one of the festival’s excellent feature films, The Red Machine.
