TMS Presents brings renowned guests to The Marin School and to our off-campus partners like Book Passage, the de Young Museum, Kerner Optical Film Studio and the San Francisco Film Society.
Our guests not only present their work, and engage in conversation with our audiences, but also partner with our students and faculty on lively projects that connect The Marin School to the world beyond. The program is both a treasure that TMS shares with our community neighbors, and a training ground for our students and staff to put our class room lessons into action.
Past guests have included renowned authors Isabel Allende, Daniel Handler, Yiyun Li, Karen Joy Fowler, Michael Thomas and Chitra Divakaruni. From the world of film we have hosted Oscar-winners John Avildsen and John Knoll, and Sundance favorites Debra Granik, Jennifer Lawrence and Lisa F. Jackson. We have been inspired by musicians like Quique Cruz and Black Nature (from Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars) and performance poets like Russell Gonzaga, Ishle Yi Park and Michelle Tea.
TMS students work closely with faculty and staff to plan and host events, and the students’ influence has been particularly notable in placing the TMS Presents spotlight on issues of human rights and social justice, both locally and globally. The program has presented a public policy forum at UCSF School of Medicine on the mass abuse of women’s rights in the DR Congo, and hosted fundraisers for our sister film program in Sierra Leone, WeOwnTV. We organize an annual “Human Rights Film Day” at the de Young Museum for high school students from around the Bay Area, and we have brought guests to neighboring schools in San Francisco and Marin City. People came from near and far to our event with Vicki Abeles, who presented her documentary, Race to Nowhere, about the stress affecting today’s high school students around the US.
Founded in 2001, TMS Presents continues to grow stronger every year, thanks to the generous contributions of our guests and partners, and the support of our entire TMS community.
TMS Presents: A Real World Education in Action!
