Barbara Brown

Head of School

I bring to TMS more than 30 years experience in education. I was the Founding Head of School at The Oakwood School, a K-12, college-preparatory independent school in Greenville, North Carolina. We started with not so much as a paper clip! We had a dream and worked collaboratively to create an amazing school that has grown exponentially. In June I returned to the school to give the commencement address on the occasion of our fifteenth anniversary. Creating a school was an experience of a lifetime!

I also served as Head of School at Oak Hill School in Eugene, Oregon, another K-12 college-preparatory school. In addition, I have worked at Menlo School in Atherton, Mid-Peninsula High School in Menlo Park, and Santa Catalina School in Monterey. They were all amazing independent schools in California.

I earned my BA from the University of California, Santa Barbara; my MA in Education from Stanford University School of Education; and my doctorate in Administration, Planning and Social Policy from Harvard Graduate School of Education. I have received two awards for Outstanding Teaching for my innovative techniques in the classroom. At both Stanford and Harvard I served as class marshal during commencement, and was also the commencement speaker at Harvard. I was honored this year to be asked to join the Harvard Graduate School of Education’s Alumni Council, representing the West Coast.

I love living in Mill Valley. I am surrounded by beauty. I love hiking and bicycling the countryside and Mount Tam. I am in the best possible location for those activities. I have two wonderful children. My son is a student at the University of California, Davis School of Engineering. My daughter is in high school. I love the arts, and enjoy dancing, singing, and taking photos. In addition, I frequently attend concerts, the theatre, and film productions.

I hope that you will come visit The Marin School. I would love to meet you personally.
